Liviu Dragnea, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, suggested that Chinese capital could be used for massive investments in energy and infrastructure.

He said that negotiations with the Chinese were close to completion but last year all talks were suspended, when the country had a technocratic government. “I hope that now, after (negotiations – e.n.) will be resumed by the current government, we will have this opportunity that within this mandate to see them finalized. And I am talking about the nuclear plant at Cernavoda and the investments at Rovinari and other investments.”

Dragnea, who heads the left wing PSD party, went on to say that Chinese investments in Eastern Europe amount to “tens of billions of euros.”

“Maybe it is time in Romania for those investments to become more present, because it would certainly support our development,” said Dragnea.

Talking about China’s Belt and Road initiative, Dragnea pointed out that Constanta Port has to become a “serious entry gate towards Eastern Europe and Europe in general.”
