Romanian PM Mihai Tudose claims that an American company is planning a “colossal” investment in Romania as part of a joint venture with a Romanian partner that will include the transfer of technology.

The head of government did not name the company, but he hinted it has manufacturing capacities.

“A large American company has started negotiations to do business here. It is for the first time in the history of this company when it moves manufacturing facilities from its mother company in the US to another country and they chose Romania. They want to make colossal investments in our country (we are talking about investments close to EUR 10 billion in the next years), to create a mixed company and a large technology transfer,” wrote the PM on Facebook, in a post in which he outlined the reasons why Romanians from abroad should return to work here. He said that companies in Romania are starting to create a growing number of high-paying jobs.

Considering that the US investment stock in Romania hovers around EUR 1 billion (not including investments carried out through other countries such as The Netherlands), the planned investments announced by the PM would rank the Americans among the top 3 largest investors in Romania.

The latest statistics show that The Netherlands generated EUR 16.1 billion worth of foreign direct investments in Romania at the end of 2015, holding a commanding share of 25 percent of the total FDI. Austria and Germany recorded EUR 9.1 billion and EUR 7.9 billion, respectively, according to the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
