The Parliament approved on Monday the request of president Klaus Iohannis’s for the organization of a referendum on the country’s anti-corruption efforts and the public office integrity.
The decision was taken unanimously.
MPs approved a consultative national referendum regarding the anti-corruption fight and the public statute integrity insurance, with the recommendation that the question should respect the Romania’s Constitution, the Law 3/2000 regarding referendum, the Romanian Constitutional Court and the recommendations in good practices Code regarding referendum adopted by the Venice Commission.
President Iohannis called for a referendum before in late January, before the goverment approved and later scrapped controversial amendments to the Criminal Code, which triggered massive street protests.
