Of the four Romanian tennis players who qualified for the Quarterfinals in the WTA Madrid tour, Simona Halep is the only one going forward to the semifinals.
After winning against co-national Irina Begu (6-3, 0-6, 6-1), Halep is to meet Austrian veteran Samantha Stosur, WTA 23rd. Halep was the highest ranked woman left in the tournament as of the quarterfinals – and the only seed.
Stosur won against Patricia Tig (6-3, 6-4) in the quarter finals. In a meeting earlier in Halep’s career the Australian dominated, but in her breakout 2013 season the latter won all three of their meetings.
