Four retailers have opened 10 stores in Romania in total this year, of which 7 belong to the Profi network, according to Mediafax newswire. Eight units operate under the supermarket format, one is a hypermarket and one is a discount point.

Profi, a network operated by investment fund Enterprise Investors, owns 375 units in Romania and boasts the largest geographical coverage among retailers. Last year it opened 92 units, aiming to open as many this year also.

With investments of several hundreds of thousands of EUR, these units are usually inaugurated all along the year. On the other hand, hypermarkets are traditionally opened mainly during spring and autumn, and investment varies between EUR 5 million (inside malls) and EUR 20 million (standalone).

Kaufland broke the pattern with the unit it had postponed from 2015 and inaugurated in the Orhideea area. Kaufland is traditionally an active company concerning expansions, Mediafax says, opening between 7 and 10 units per year, though its stores are usually smaller than others on the segment.

Lidl and Mega Image opened a unit each in 2016. Romania’s retail has 1,600 stores with business totaling EUR 8.5-9 billion.
