Romania and Hungary have signed in Bucharest an agreement on the delivery of Romanian natural gas to Hungary until 2020. The agreement was signed by Romania’s Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu and Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

According to the Hungarian official, starting 2020, large quantities of natural gas will extracted from the Black Sea will be delivered to Hungary. Moreover, Hungarian companies have already reserved the entire capacity of EUR 4.4 billion cubic meters per yar of the delivery pipeline connecting Romania to Hungary.

“This is Hungary’s first opportunity in the past decades to buy large quantities of natural gas from other source apart from Russia,” Szijjarto said, who added that the cooperation agreement represents a historic progress to ensure Hungary’s energy security.

According to the Hungarian official, the Romanian side agreed to built stations that will allow for the delivery of 1.75 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year in 2020, and the capacity will be increased up to 4.4 billion cubic meters in 2022.

“The Hungarian Government decided to build the pipeline sector currently missing between the central distribution hub from Varosfold and Vecses, near Budapest where the gas pipeline between Slovakia and Hungary is missing,” Szijjarto said.

The two sides also decided to build a high speed train between Budapest and Cluj-Napoca.
